Self Esteem and Dating

When dating, it’s important to maintain a strong sense of self-esteem. Low self-esteem can skew your perspective on why you are dating and can negatively impact the experience. Usually, serious self-esteem issues result from events that land a huge blow to someone’s sense of self-worth, such as losing a job, divorce or marital issues. Low self-esteem can turn dating into seeking approval from others. Often, people who date while going through an insecure time in their lives work hard at their relationships out of fear that they’re going to lose the other person. Inevitably, the relationship is distorted when someone depends on the other person for validation, and people who can’t respect themselves have trouble respecting others.

It’s important to keep a positive self-image while dating to avoid falling into the pitfall of depending on someone else to validate your self-worth. One way to be sure self esteem and dating coincide is to think of your best memories from relationships or friendships and use them as a way to remind yourself that you deserve to feel good and that you don’t need to be in a relationship to feel like you can be loved. Another thing you can do is try to learn a new skill — being productive or creative is a great way to improve your self-esteem in the long term. Just remember that it’s important to be honest about who you are and to remember that you are worth loving and being cared about.
