Dealing with the Losses that Life Brings to Us

How can you support someone who is grieving, especially if you think their loss is negligible? Did you know that even “small” losses (for example: going off to college or the sale of a house) can cause grief, since grief is a very personal experience? If you know someone who is dealing with the losses that life brings to us, either large or small, you can help them by acknowledging their pain, remembering the loss, talking with the person about how they are feeling, and not minimizing their pain. Sometimes just sitting with the person can help them feel supported. Give them time to heal and allow them to acknowledge their right to be sad and upset. If they don’t seem to be able to move pass their loss, you can help by encouraging them to seek out a counselor to help them move forward.
