Take the Data Out of Dating: Texting on Dates

The digital revolution has made information and communication more accessible than it’s ever been. As a result, we’ve entered an era where we feel we must always be in constant contact with the world, making us afraid of leaving friendly texts and work emails unanswered for too long. In fact, a 2011 study in the journal Public and Ubiquitous Computing concluded that the average person checks their phone 34 times a day. But, as with everything else, there is a time and a place to pull out your phone: texting on dates is not it.

A cellphone can be a great tool for connecting to others, but it can just as easily isolate us if we’re not careful. When you’re meant to be spending face-to-face time with someone and getting to know them, it’s considered impolite to have your phone out. It tends to be quite obvious when someone is trying to get away with texting. While we convince ourselves that we’re multitasking and being efficient, no one really thinks that someone else on their phone is really paying any attention to them. Also, every minute spent reading or sending a text is a minute that could have been used to get to know your date. It’s difficult to gauge your compatibility with someone with whom you haven’t properly conversed. And if you’re on the receiving end, it might be a red flag, but it might be wise to politely address it before jumping to any conclusions.
